All meetings are FREE* and everyone is welcome
Since we began in 1994, we have tried to cater to all levels of developer experience in our meetings... beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Except when we have a guest speaker that takes up two hours (7-9pm), this is how we try to design our meetings:
- 6pm: Beginner level topic
- 7pm: Beginner/intermediate level topic. If we have demos of third-party products, we will usually put them in this time slot
- 8pm: Intermediate/ advanced level topic
If you have any questions, would like to suggest a topic or volunteer to give a talk,
to send an e-mail to David McCarter
* To raise money to operate our group, we hold a raffle at the end of each meeting (9pm). Tickets are sold for $1 each at 8pm. We have lots of cool swag to raffle off each month like books, software, T-shirts, jackets and more!
If you are a vendor and would like to donate to our raffel and get your name listed at the bottom of this page, please
to e-mail David McCarter.
The History of the Group:
This group was created in 1994 by local programmers for the purpose of exchanging
useful information relating to Microsoft Visual Basic and related tools and has now grown into the .NET technologies.
Our meetings include topics on .NET itself as well as database, software design,
software management, internet, and software business issues. In short, we
encompass the entire process of software development and tools from a .NET-centric
angle. The group is run
exclusively by volunteers. Our meetings are designed specifically to
provide information that is of practical benefit to programmers of any level of
knowledge, from novice to expert. Each meeting is normally
structured with two presentations for a greater variety of information. We
also attempt to help with specific problems and questions outside of the main
presentations in a one-on-one meeting with a knowledgeable volunteer.
Directors
The San Diego .NET Developers Group is led by some of the top .NET programmers in the
San Diego area. It was decided in the early conception of the group that there
would be no president, vice president etc. Instead, all those who want to
volunteer their time to help with the group have an equal and sometimes strong
voice. Six or more heads is always better than one!
Below is an list of those people, a short
description of what they do, and how to contact them:
David McCarter
Also known as ".NETDave", David is one of the founders and chief lecturers
of the group. He also has the dubious distinction of sweet talking (begging)
component vendors to come demo their products or donate software for the groups
monthly software raffle. He can be heard to say "San Diego is a GREAT place
to come and take a vacation!"
David has worked for various software development companies around the San Diego area for the past 11 years as a senior software engineer. He is the editor-in-chief
of VSDN Tips & Tricks
(formerly VB Tips & Tricks, started in 1994), a web site dedicated to helping
programmers in all aspects of programming. He also runs his own software/consulting
company called NicheWare. He has written for magazines like the Visual Basic Programmers
Journal and has three books out (VSDN Tips & Tricks .NET Coding Standards, David McCarter's VB Tips & Techniques
and
VB Tips & Tricks - Volume 1). David also gives talks on programming at colleges,
high schools and conferences and teaches at the University of California San Diego.
